LORAN AWARD
Applications for 2023-24 year are now open
The selection of a Loran Scholar is unique in its attention to a young person’s character. They believe that integrity, courage, grit and personal autonomy are better indicators of overall potential than standard academic measures. To discover these traits, they administer the most comprehensive and thorough scholarship selection process in Canada.
Every year, they select up to 36 Loran Scholars from approximately 4,000 high school and CEGEP applicants. They interview candidates regionally in 21 cities across the country and invite the top 84 to Toronto for national selections weekend in February. Each Loran Scholar is assessed by up to 12 different individuals over the course of three months.
Tenable at 25 partner universities, the Loran Award is valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars. They also grant up to 94 finalist and provincial awards per year.
Eligibility Criteria

- You will be asked to upload a PDF version of your transcript or marks summary (report cards are not accepted).
- A draft copy of your application can be downloaded for review/editing on the last page before you submit. Once you submit your application, you cannot make changes to it.
TIPS:
- Be sure to complete Step 2 several days before the deadline to give your reference enough time to complete Step 3.
- It is not possible to change the language of the application site after you start your application. The language you select for your application will carry into your interviews, if you are selected

NatureKids BC $1500 Scholarship for young adults! Open September 25, 2023
The NatureKids BC Green Club Joseph Lin Legacy Fund Scholarship will award one British Columbian young adult $1,500 to continue to further their connection with nature.This September, NatureKids BC is pleased to once again host the Green Club Joseph Lin Legacy Fund Scholarship in memory of the late Joseph Lin, notable environmental leader and educator. Joseph is best known for his work as the founding President of the Green Club Community, a non-profit organization focused on environmental education among the Chinese-speaking communities in Vancouver, British Columbia.
In recognition of his contributions, The NatureKids BC Green Club Joseph Lin Legacy Fund Scholarship will annually award one young adult from British Columbia (ages 17-25) with a previous demonstration and commitment to nature, the amount of $1,500 to continue to further their connection with, education about and service toward nature.

In 2023, the Justice Centre invites Canadian students to investigate freedom of expression in Canada. This contest is an opportunity for Canadians to advance our understanding of either (a) how regulatory bodies are impacting freedom of expression online or (b) how governments are limiting the ability of Canadians to protest and why the ability to protest is an important dimension of free expression in democracies.
Option 1: Free speech and the internet
Canadian governments are implementing policies and laws that limit freedom of expression online. Focus on one case (or related cases) of governments limiting freedom of expression online. Are these limitations reasonable? If they are unreasonable, why?
Option 2: Protests, free speech, and democracy
Protests are considered to be a kind of expression or a way of expressing oneself. Sometimes, governments place limitations on the ability of Canadians to express themselves through protesting. - Applicant will be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized general/ vocational College or post-secondary institution in Canada or USA by the start of the next school semester.
- Applicant must be a Canadian or American Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Applicant must be 24 years of age or less at the time of application.

- Essays should be double-spaced with (a minimum of) one-inch margins.

- Essays should use a variety of sources—academic journals, news magazines, online and print newspapers, books, government documents, publications from research organizations. At least three of the cited materials should be primary sources (i.e., not a second-hand account of a primary source).

HORATIO ALGER: Opens December 1st, 2023
To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full-time as a high school grade 11 or first-year CEGEP student in Canada
- Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university
- Prove critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required)
- Demonstrate desire and ability to be entrepreneurial in a chosen field
- Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities
- Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity
- Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 70
- Be Canadian citizens

This year BC Transplant will award four $1500 scholarships to Grade 10-12 students who lead an organ donation awareness project in their school or community the the 22/23 school year. This scholarship is in honor of Logan Boulet, the Humboldt Broncos and Green Shirt Day.

RE/MAX of Western Canada has renewed the Quest for Excellence bursary program. This year we are once again offering (16) $1,000 bursaries for a total of $16,000 to grade 12 students.
This program was established by RE/MAX of Western Canada to recognize the success and ongoing pursuits of Western Canadian students in regards to leadership and community contribution initiatives.
Who Is Eligible? To qualify, participants must be a Grade 12 student attending high school in the 2023/2024 academic year, who have not previously participated in graduation commencement ceremonies in the past.
